WHAT IS BLAEK STORE'S DEFINITION OF 'ORGANIC' SHOPPING?
Organic clothing or shopping is the most universally understood, thanks to the organic food industry. A lot of people prefer to buy organic fruit and vegetables to avoid consuming pesticides and countless other chemicals. The same goes for what you wear or use in your daily life, so if it is a material derived from a plant that is grown (such as cotton), then it's got to be organic!
Sure, it's important to worry about you, your family and friends and the evidence we have of links between these chemicals and some of the most prolific diseases is extensive. However, chemical clothing production also renders soil and waterways virtually dead, destroying biodiversity and requires so much more water to secure a good crop.
- Five of the top nine pesticides used on non-organic cotton are cancer-causing chemicals (cyanazine, dicofol, naled, propargite and trifluralin).
- In India, 91% of male cotton workers exposed to pesticides eight hours or more per day experienced common health disorders, including chromosomal aberrations, cell death and cell cycle delay.
- In 2021, over 1 million Americans learnt they have some form of cancer and 10,400 people in the U.S. die each year from cancer related to pesticides.
HOW CAN YOU SHOP ORGANICALLY?
Shopping for products made from organic cotton, organic linen or other organic fabrics, is truly caring for yourself, the people who grow and harvest that material and the earth. Another added benefit? You'll find that your organic clothes will feel softer, last longer, and look better in the long run. It's a no-brainer and while it can be seen as a luxury, we truly think buying organic clothing is a necessity, because the opposite is destructive, dangerous and more expensive in the long run.
OUR ORGANIC BRANDS
There are so many brands out there with organic as a strong focus and it's becoming more prevalent in the fashion industry every year. However, be careful that their values align - you want those brands to be able to show where they source their fabrics, where that organic cotton was grown and who made the product. Beware of brands screaming about using organic fabric but not speaking on their ethics!
There is not enough space to list all of our organic brands here (which is a good thing) but just know that all of our brands do. A great brand to start your organic journey with however is Nudie Jeans Co. who do great jeans but also a full range of clothing which is all organic.
OUR NON-TOXIC, CHEMICAL FREE BRANDS
For beauty products, skincare and homewares we think it's equally as important that these items are free from nasty chemicals (that your skin absorbs), and are 100% natural. We have a beautiful range of handpicked, chemical-free, non-toxic products at BLAEK Store and if you have any questions please get in touch.
