BLAEKS’ Sustainable Swaps - Shampoo With A Purpose

If you are new to this, like a lot of our customers, we always advise choosing one room of your house, either the kitchen or the bathroom are great starting points.

Today we’re heading into the shower. Let me paint you a picture, you’ve probably got 2 big-ass plastic bottles of your current favourite shampoo and conditioner, there is a high chance you have another 4 or so bottles, half empty or maybe even barely used, of various shampoo and conditioner brands. Maybe you recently dyed your hair so now you have shampoo and conditioner for colour treated hair, maybe you’ve got thin hair, so you have a volume boosting conditioner in another corner of the shower. All of a sudden, you’ve got about 6 plastic bottles of hair products sitting in the shower and you’ve barely got any space left to actually stand in the shower and wash your hair. A lot of people have hair, a lot of people wash their hair, that’s a lot of single use plastic waste in a year from each person.

Some of you are probably thinking, yes but I put my empty bottle in the recycling bin. This is great, because for obvious reasons we don’t want it to end up in landfill. Unfortunately, plastic can only be recycled 1 or 2 times in its life and a lot of the time, virgin plastic must be added for it to be made into a new product. So, while it may be getting reused, once it’s recycled once, that’s the end of its lifecycle. It then sits in landfill for the rest of our lives, and the lives of our children, and our children’s children. It will sit in landfill for 1000 years.
