BLAEKS’ Sustainable Swaps - Shampoo With A Purpose
Whether you’re just starting your journey or living out your best eco-friendly life there is always something more we can be doing as the sustainability movement evolves and the BLAEK Store team are here to help guide you every step of the way. If you are new to this, like a lot of our customers, we always advise choosing one room of your house, either the kitchen or the bathroom are great starting points.
Today we’re heading into the shower. Let me paint you a picture, you’ve probably got 2 big-ass plastic bottles of your current favourite shampoo and conditioner, there is a high chance you have another 4 or so bottles, half empty or maybe even barely used, of various shampoo and conditioner brands. Maybe you recently dyed your hair so now you have shampoo and conditioner for colour treated hair, maybe you’ve got thin hair, so you have a volume boosting conditioner in another corner of the shower. All of a sudden, you’ve got about 6 plastic bottles of hair products sitting in the shower and you’ve barely got any space left to actually stand in the shower and wash your hair. Every time you lift your arms up you keep knocking a bottle off the shower caddy and onto the shower floor. No wonder washing your hair is such a chore!
Ok so this sounds like a lot, I’d love to say I’m over-exaggerating but unfortunately, this is what a lot of showers look like. One bottle of shampoo could last you a month or a little longer, conditioner might last 2 months. So that’s about 24 bottles of shampoo and conditioner in a year per person at a minimum. A lot of people have hair, a lot of people wash their hair, that’s a lot of single use plastic waste in a year from each person.
Some of you are probably thinking, yes but I put my empty bottle in the recycling bin. This is great, because for obvious reasons we don’t want it to end up in landfill. Unfortunately, plastic can only be recycled 1 or 2 times in its life and a lot of the time, virgin plastic must be added for it to be made into a new product. So, while it may be getting reused, once it’s recycled once, that’s the end of its lifecycle. It then sits in landfill for the rest of our lives, and the lives of our children, and our children’s children. It will sit in landfill for 1000 years.
So how can we be part of the solution? Thankfully, at BLAEK Store we’ve got the best alternative. Shampoo With A Purpose, Shampoo Bars. One of the best sustainable swaps you can make in the bathroom, these shampoo bars are the equivalent of 6 bottles of shampoo and conditioner. You will use on average 2 bars a year and they come packaged in cardboard so it’s a completely waste free alternative to the regular haircare bottle disaster we’ve been finding ourselves in. What’s even better, it won’t get in the way of your shower space, you can breakout into song and dance while your shampoo bar sits in a chic little bowl on a shelf outside your shower only to be used on your next weekly glow-up.
But Nikki, my hair is super wild and dry it needs a million conditioners to come out looking amazing. Stop right there, you clearly haven’t seen the mane that sits atop my head, you’re speaking to a frizz-pert. Shampoo With A Purpose has a bar for every hair type, you’ve got The O.G, for normal hair (lucky people!), there’s one for Dry and Damaged (hello, my fave), Colour Treated and Volume. You’ve got the hair, we’ve got the solution for you, in bar form. One of the most underrated features of the shampoo bar is its ability to go everywhere with you no matter the journey. Simply wrap it up in a reusable beeswax wrap and voila you can take it along to your next holiday to the Greek Islands without having to buy it a seat on the plane or be worried it will self-combust and coat the entire contents of your suitcase.
Like many people, I too was a shampoo and conditioner bottle hoarder, I switched to Shampoo With A Purpose three years ago and I’ve used four bars, this means I’ve saved more than 100 bottles from ending up in landfill. I’ve also saved water and time as the hair washing process has been cut down dramatically from about 25 minutes to 10 minutes.
There are more positive outcomes than can be counted on one hand. Who knew that such a small change in your everyday life could make such a big difference not only to your quality of living but to everyone else’s and to the planet.
The less plastic in and around our lives the better life is.
